In a more practical way it is crucial to disentangle the many connotations of stress. We cannot always control what happens to us. We cannot, and should not, eliminate the fight-or-flight response, for it is a powerful, highly sophisticated resource. But we will be able to find ways of keeping the stress response in balance, so that it works for us and not against us.
