Work As A Unique Opportunity For Transformation

September 17, 2018

Work can be a surprising opportunity for personal transformation in ways you don't expect.

TRANSCRIPT

Here's a unique opportunity for transformation: work.

Why is it unique? It's unique because you are thrown in with people that you don't know, you might not like. There's all sorts of hierarchies, teams, politics, projects, and challenges, both in terms of people and time.

Jim Selman says transformation is relational, that what we're transforming is actually our relationship to ourselves, others, circumstances, and time. That you may not be able to change other people, as a matter of fact, you can't change other people and you can't change all circumstances, but you can always change your relationship to those things. For work, because it's so all-encompassing and challenging on so many areas, it's very different than the challenges that we have with ourselves, the challenges that we may have with our family or friends or spouses or children.

So if you take that framework as an opportunity for self-transformation and self-learning, then you can take some of these more difficult challenges head on and work on you.
