Listening and Interpretation

Coaching to the Human Soul is a book I recommend. It's written by Alan Sieler, and it's an ontological coaching and deep change book. So I wanna talk today about a specific thing in this book, which is about listening. Listening equals hearing plus interpretation.

So if you walked outside and you went into the woods and you heard a tap, tap, tap, you wouldn't just hear the tap, tap, tap, you would hear a woodpecker pecking. It occurs as one thing. We don't just listen to what our friend or our colleague or our mate is saying to us. Listening is including what they're saying and our past history, our thoughts, our biases, things that we are interpreting as they're speaking.

So when you're listening to someone, you're not necessarily just listening to what they're saying. It's really good to take those things and split them apart. What's being said and what am I interpreting about what's being said.
